Looking for markets to serve is the first step in export business. It’s an interesting venture if you know how to play your card well. You’ll not only make high level of connection locally, but also international contacts that could yield to millions of Dollars overnight.
If you’re starting from scratch, try getting your tools for communication;
- Mobile phone, OR office phone and OR fax machine
- Computer with Internet
Aside the above communication tools, a personal visit MAY eventually be needed.
Haven’t said that, let’s now talk about HOW to look for markets to serve;
One of the best ways of searching for markets to serve as I would always recommend is through your BANK.
Ask your bank (see sample letter below) to write to its correspondence bank(s) in your targeted territory asking their local people to send you a shortlists of potential distributors, or agents
Other mean of searching: Your national export promotion council OR your local Export representative service is the place to make some (if not all) your required inquiries about available commodities for exportation, countries in need of your local minerals and or soil produces, suitable packages for export shipments, export relationship among countries and so forth. This research can also be carried out through your local or national libraries, local or national trade press, and related professional institutions and by asking colleagues in other companies.
If you want bank to help you, below is a sample of correspondence that you can adjust for your need/ or situation or adopt for similar situation! It must yield result…. Note that you can also send similar letter to the commercial section of embassy. They’ll be willing to help too.

Export Agents in the Eastern Europe States
We are as you know Geokaz Global Ventures, a small company specializing in exportation of Cocoa produce for international markets. We want to develop certain overseas markets, in particular certain areas of the Eastern Europe, and believe this can be done through top-class stock-holding distributors.
However, we have no suitable contacts at present. Could you kindly make enquiries on our behalf with your overseas branches or correspondent banks in the Europe eastern states, to ask if they can put forward names of potential agents!
Candidates should be established in foods and or beverages sectors and should, of course, be well regarded.
We will take the correspondence further when we have some names to write to.
